CCHI Celebrates Legislative Victory for Children’s Health
Sponsored Legislation AB 2706 by Hernandez Headed to Governor Brown for Signature
August 27th, 2014 was an historic day for children’s health and California Coverage & Health Initiatives (CCHI) as its sponsored Assembly Bill 2706 authored by Assemblymember Hernandez passed the Assembly Floor on Concurrence in a 55-22 vote and now moves to the Governor’s Desk for Signature.
“CCHI and its statewide membership of community based outreach and enrollment organizations have long known the value in partnering with schools to inform and assist families with enrolling into health coverage and other services,” said Suzie Shupe, Executive Director of CCHI. “It was from this understanding of how parents, schools, and local community resources interact that Assembly Bill 2706 was born and led to our work with Assemblymember Hernandez. It is deeply gratifying to reach this point in the process and know we are so close to reaching even more families with the message of affordable coverage and assistance.”
If signed by the Governor, AB 2706 will bring crucial information to parents about what health coverage means to their child and their family and will help them easily and safely connect to community assistors who can help them enroll thus reducing the number of eligible, but uninsured children in California.
“School registration is a time of excitement for parents, a time to think about our children’s future and their potential. It is also a perfect time to help parents understand how health coverage leads to their childrens’ achievement in school and in life,” said Autumn Ogden Policy Analyst with CCHI. “Research shows children with health insurance have a better opportunity to excel. California children who newly enroll in a health coverage program experience a nearly 63% improvement in performance and paying attention in class and are better prepared to succeed in a learning environment and in life. CCHI and Assemblymember Hernandez recognized that the time was right for legislative action to help promote the culture of coverage for California’s families and children.”
“The passage of AB 2706 from the legislature to Governor Brown’s Desk marks a very special day for all that CCHI and our members stand for: assistance for families to access affordable coverage and quality care,” stated Suzie Shupe. “Our members are deeply rooted in their communities, speak the languages of the families that live there, and genuinely care about the well-being of all children. We hope Governor Brown seizes this opportunity to help ensure a healthy future for California’s school aged children so they can succeed and thrive as they so deserve.”
